Dinas sy'n gorwedd 87 km i'r de o ddinas Damascus yn y Jabal el Druze yn Syria yw Shahba (Arabeg شهبا ), sy'n adnabyddus hefyd dan ei henw hynafol Philippopolis.

Shahba oedd man geni Philip yr Arab yn ôl rhai ffynonellau. Pan ddaeth Philip yn Ymerawdwr Rhufain yn 244 OC, cysgegrodd ei hun i'r dasg o droi ei dref enedigol ddinod yn fetropolis ac ailenwyd y ddinas yn Philippopolis er ei anrhydedd. Dywedir y dymunai'r ymerawdwr greu efelychiad o ddinas Rhufain ei hun yno. Codwyd temlau, bwau buddugoliaeth, baddondai, theatr a mur amgylchynnol yno yn y dull Rhufeinig arferol, ond peidiwyd y gwaith adeiladu ar ôl marwolaeth Philip.
