Cynyddodd poblogaeth y dref yn fawr yn ystod y 20g, o 4,049 ym 1901 i 89,663 yn yr ardal adeiledig yn 2011.[2] Digwyddodd y cynnydd mwyaf yn y 1950au a'r 1960au, ar ôl cafodd Stevenage ei dynodi yn gyntaf o'r trefi newydd yn Lloegr o dan Ddeddf Seneddol (New Towns Act, 1946).
