Roedd y boblogaeth yn 2006 yn 136,942.
Daw'r enw o enw llwyth Celtaidd y Turones. Ymladdwyd Brwydr Tours rhwng Tours a Poitiers ym mis Hydref 732, pan orchfygodd y Ffranciaid dan Siarl Martel fyddin Fwslimaidd dan reolwr Al-Andalus, Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi.
Daeth Tours yn ganolfan eglwysig bwysig, ac yn y Canol Oesoedd yn gyrchfan boblogaidd i bererionion oherwydd bri Sant Martin o Tours, ail esgob Tours. Esgob enwog arall oedd Sant Gregori o Tours (c. 538 – 594). Daeth yn brifddinas rhanbarth Touraine.
