Euglenaceae (ICN), ook bekend onder de naam Euglenidae (ICZN), is een familie van geflagelleerde eencelligen binnen het fylum Euglenozoa. De meest soorten zijn fotosynthetisch. Deze protisten zijn historisch zowel ingedeeld via de botanische nomenclatuur (als algen) als via de zoölogische nomenclatuur (als protozoa).[1]
Morfologie en levenswijze
De Euglenaceae vormen qua morfologie de meest diverse familie binnen de grotere clade Euglenophyceae. Het zijn voornamelijk eencelligen, met uitzondering van het geslacht Colacium. De meeste soorten zijn vrijlevend; enkele soorten komen voor in het verteringskanaal van dieren. Twee geslachten, Strombomonas en Trachelomonas, hebben een schaalstructuurtje rond de cel (lorica).
Net als bij andere eugleniden worden cellen in de Euglenaceae omgeven een flexibel eiwitlaagje onder het celmembraan, de pellicula, die zich draaiend kan vervormen waardoor de cel voortbeweegt. In de meeste soorten zijn chloroplasten aanwezig, in sommige geslachten zijn deze secundair verloren gegaan.[2] Belangrijk voor identificatie zijn de vorm en het aantal pyrenoïden in de cellen.

De familie bestaat uit ongeveer 800 soorten,[3] en wordt onderverdeeld in tien genera:[1]
