Leopardus është një gjini e maceve të vogla kryesisht vendas në Amerikën Qëndrore  dhe Jugore , me një gamë shumë të vogël që shtrihet në Shtetet e Bashkuara të Jugut . Gjinia konsiderohet dega më e vjetër e prejardhjeve të maceve të vogla që kaluan në Amerikë , me gjinitë Lynx dhe Puma që ishin më vonë degë të të njëjtit grup.[2] Specia më e madhe e Leopardus është Okeloti ( L. pardalis); shumica e specieve të tjera u ngjajnë maceve shtëpiake në madhësi, me kodkodin (L. guigna ) duke qenë macja më e vogël në Amerikë. Margai ( L. wiedii ) është përshtatur më shumë në jetë arboreale se çdo mace tjetër në Amerikë.[3]

Pavarësisht nga emri, leopardi është anëtar i gjinisë Panthera , jo Leopardus .

Taksonomia

Emri gjenerik Leopardus u propozua nga John Edward Grey në 1842, kur ai përshkroi dy lëkurat e maceve me njolla nga Amerika Qendrore dhe dy nga India në koleksionin e Muzeut të Historisë Natyrore, Londër .[4]

Studimet gjenetike tregojnë se Leopardus formon një kladë të veçantë brenda Felinae dhe evoluan në Amerikën Jugore rreth 8 milion vjet më parë.[2] Brenda gjinisë, dy linja të dallueshme evolucionare duket se ekzistojnë; njëra që çon në okelotin, margai, dhe macen e Andeve , dhe tjetrët që çon në speciet e mbetura.[5]
