Pooideae là phân họ lớn nhất của họ cỏ họ Poaceae, với khoảng 4,000 loài trong 15 tông và khoảng 200 chi. Chúng bao gồm một số loại ngũ cốc chính như lúa mì, lúa mạch, yến mạch, lúa mạch đen và nhiều loại cỏ sân và đồng. Chúng thường được gọi là cỏ mùa lạnh, vì chúng phân bố ở khí hậu ôn đới.[1] Tất cả chúng đều sử dụng con đường quang hợp C3.
Pooideae là nhóm chị em của các loài tre trong nhóm BOP, và chính chúng cũng được chia thành 15 tông.[1]
