Engbloem (Vincetoxicum) is een plantengeslacht. Het geslacht werd in het Cronquist-systeem tot de zijdeplantfamilie (Asclepiadaceae) gerekend. Tegenwoordig (Angiosperm Phylogeny Group) zijn deze echter allemaal ondergebracht bij de maagdenpalmfamilie (Apocynaceae). De soorten komen voor in Europa, Noordwest-Afrika, op het eiland Socotra, Azië en het zuidwestelijk Pacifisch gebied.[1]

Tot grofweg rond 1980 kon in het Nederlandse Zuid-Limburg de witte engbloem (Vincetoxicum hirundinaria, synoniem: Vincetoxicum album genoemd) gevonden worden. Nu lijkt daar de plant uitgestorven. In België (onder meer in Belgisch Limburg) is deze plant niet zeldzaam op kalkrijke bodems.

De donkerpaars tot bijna zwart bloeiende soort Vincetoxicum nigrum is niet oorspronkelijk een Nederlandse plant, maar hoogstwaarschijnlijk ingevoerd door zaad in fazantenvoer uit Zuid-Europa. De bloemen lijken op die van Hoya, waarvan hij een familielid is. In de Nederlandse winter sterft deze uit lianen bestaande slingerplant bovengronds af. De plant produceert veel zaad, dat zich met de wind zwevend verspreidt zoals paardenbloemzaad.
